Building The Future Of Care Project

Dartmouth General Hospital is undergoing its most significant transformation in our 42 year history. Our $13 million Above and Beyond Capital Campaign is leveraging $137 million from the provincial government for a total investment of $150 million in our facility. We are redeveloping our existing site and expanding our footprint to position the Dartmouth General to play a pivotal role in the realignment of acute care delivery to residents all across Halifax and beyond.

A new three-story addition, the Neville J. Gilfoy Wing, has been added to the back of the hospital and opened in December 2019 to our community. This will house:

A new Surgical Centre with eight modern operating theatres enabling us to do 70 percent more surgeries annually. By 2021, we will go from 5000 surgeries annually to 8500.

The Fred Smithers Centre for Orthopedic Care so that primary hip and knee surgery for the majority of Halifax residents and beyond will be done at Dartmouth General. Among the key benefits will be increased orthopedic surgical capacity for Nova Scotia to help reduce wait times.

A new Medical Device Reprocessing area which is responsible for the sterilization of the hospital's medical devices to ensure our infection control rates are to the highest standard.

A new Outpatient Centre and Endoscopy Clinic which will double our outpatient clinic space from 9 to 18 clinic rooms.

Elsewhere in the hospital, renovation and retrofitting will take place. This will result in:

48 new inpatient beds on the vacant 5th floor, increasing our bed capacity by 40%.

A new and relocated Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will help us care for our most critically ill patients and will be strategically placed between the Emergency Department and Surgical Centre.

Our Diagnostic Imaging Department will be reconfigured, incorporating the latest digital technologies and also be future proofed for the addition of an MRI.

A brand new 6-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) will enable nursing staff to more effectively monitor and care for patients leaving the ICU.

This once-in-a-generation investment will result in world-class upgrades to improve patient wait times, offer additional services, and overall, enhance the patient experience in our community.

The Above & Beyond Capital Campaign

image description image description

The Above and Beyond Capital Campaign is a significant turning point for healthcare in our province. It represents a $13 million step that will leave a $150 million footprint on health services delivery in our community.

The funds we raise leverage an investment of $137 million from the Province meaning donations from the community will be matched by more than 10 times. Government funds will be used to build, renovate and also support equipment and technology. The funds we raise as a community will be focused on a central priority: providing the latest tools and technology that will directly impact the quality of health services available at the Dartmouth General.

The Above and Beyond Capital Campaign will allow the Dartmouth General Hospital to expand and improve health services delivery to our patient base and to the broader community from Halifax to Bedford.

The Dartmouth General has earned its long-standing reputation of having a collaborative and innovative team and the tools and technology funded by the Foundation’s campaign will only allow us to do more.

A task force of committed volunteers, run by our campaign cabinet co-chairs, John Fitzpatrick Q.C. and Dr. Carla Pittman, are canvassing local businesses, organizations, families and individuals to achieve our goal. We are proud to say that we have now reached our goal!
